Picking Up the Pieces: When a Niche Store Builder Loses Their Way

By Tyler | Aug 20, 2008

Hello everyone, today I would like to change things up a little bit and make my first post-vacation entry be one that will hopefully not just motivate you all, but myself as well!

About three weeks ago when I left for my vacation, I fully expected for my BANS stores and Blogs to suffer due to my having to 100% disregard them for almost an entire month.  I was expecting to be behind on postings, link building, marketing… All the important steps a Niche Store Builder or Blogger must take to ensure their best chance for success.

What I was not counting on however, was losing the ambition and drive to do those things upon my return!

As most of you have probably become aware, running a successful blog or empire of Niche Stores take an insane amount of self reliance and a “Go Get’em!” type attitude.  Laziness and a general malaise towards working on your sites simply will not cut it, and your traffic, clicks, and of course earnings will suffer greatly!

I was quite pleased while on the cruise each day when I would check my emails and eBay stats, to see that even though I was not actively maintaining my Niche sites, that I was still pulling in a decent amount of cash from them.  The first week or so I was feeling pretty good about myself.  After that first week however, I started to notice that there were steady declines in my traffic, from several hundred clicks per day, to sometimes a mere 20! That is across ALL my sites!!!

I began to panic a little bit.   Had I missed my chance to do the right things in the right amount of time?  Had I missed my window of opportunity?  Had my absence doomed my business?

The answer to that question is, of course: “Only if I allow it to!”

The fact of the matter is, every Niche Store Builder or Blogger will go through a period after their first few months in the game where suddenly the initial surge of traffic and euphoria over a new endeavor wears off.  What either makes or breaks the people put in this situation is how they respond to the adversity…  Do they write off their initial success as beginners luck, and assume that they cannot replicate it over the long haul?  Or do they re-commit themselves to not only regaining their past success, but surpassing it?

Well I am here today to pledge to all my loyal readers here at The Niche Store Journey that I intend to be the in the second group!  In both this blog, which has quickly become one of my favorite projects, and in my Niche Stores I will continue to strive to attain excellence, despite the current drop-off of success.

The fact remains: I am the only one who can change it, and in order to do so I must re-ignite the passion and desire to be successful!

So even though we may all lose our patience for link-building, optimization, and marketing, just remember that incredible feeling the first time you checked your stats to find a nice big commission in your account.  Or the first time you received 100 visitors from search engines in a single day, or whatever you consider to be a huge milestone in your success.

Remember that milestone, and commit yourself to shattering it in the coming weeks and months.

This post has been a very difficult one for me to “put out there”, because I risk sounding as if I have given up, or soured my views on BANS.  Rest assured this is not at all the case!  I am simply putting me thoughts out there to bounce off of you all for support and feedback.

I would love to hear from all of you, how you have learned to cope with the inevitable “Hitting the Wall” phase in your Niche Store Building/Blogging Journey!
