Somehow, they multiple with little effort on my part. Every few months I go in and deactivate a bunch of plugins and deleted them from my site. Too much of a good thing no longer is, when it comes to plugins. Fortunately, I've only had one plugin cause conflicts with others, and I don't remember which one it was (I no longer use it).
